Mixed Reality and Education,

Virtual reality is able to improve the education level of a student and engagement and it transforms the traditional education way into an effective and attractive way. This virtual reality education is working on a created virtual premise and it can be divided into two different types. The first way is that students can explore a virtual surrounding by using, mouse, keyboard and some other devices. The second method allows students to wear a Head-Mounted Display (HMD) and the motion controller. Then can get the experience of the environment which is mixed by real and world.


By using a multimedia projector or a display screen, students can only see what they are learning. But in this way, students can interact with what it is being learnt. It causes to motivate students in learning and fully understand what they learnt. Because of virtual reality concepts, students are able to touch and manipulate objects generated by a computer.

Also, virtual reality is applicable to the school library system. When a student read a book, they can get experience regarding what they read and they can further explore the subject or topic and how things happen in real-world by living it. Otherwise, students are framed to only word descriptions in books. Laboratories in schools are introduced to students to learn by doing. But there are some subjects’ areas that students cannot do experiments in school or university level like nuclear science.

In mathematics, students can interact with multiple data sets, formulas and mathematical concepts as well as. Virtual reality can be used to reduce geographical limitations and to teach any subject easily by immersing in the subject. Virtual reality technology allows both students and teacher to go back in time and explore living or non-living beings no longer existing like dinosaurs. In school trips, it is much difficult to plan a school trip, because organizers have to consider about student’s safety, budget and permissions from respective officers. But virtual reality provides students to reach anywhere safely.


According to educational psychologists, learning by doing engages the mind in a remarkable way. Students are not framed on reading instructions instead of using them in practice. Sri Lanka as a developing country, we can use virtual reality to enhance the Sri Lankan Education system.
